Creating Rural Youth Employment Opportunities

Support to Integrated Agribusiness Hubs in Africa

Grace Wanjiru, 22, is a young tailor from Ronda Ward in Nakuru County. She comes from a single-parent household of five and is the eldest of four siblings.

A beneficiary of the IFAD-supported JOY Project since March 2024, Grace received basic training in sewing at Barut Vocational Training Centre in Barut Ward. She later joined the Nakuru Textiles Hub, where she gained hands-on experience and advanced her skills in garment production — from cutting and stitching to using special machines for buttons, ironing, and packaging.

Now employed at the hub, Grace earns an income based on the number of garments she produces, with workers compensated according to their output. On average, she sews up to ten tracksuits a day, contributing to clothing orders supplied to the county government. Through her earnings, Grace has managed to save enough to purchase her own sewing machine, marking her first step toward self-reliance.

The JOY Project, supported by IFAD, continues to empower youth like Grace with vocational skills and employment opportunities, promoting decent work and inclusive economic growth through sustainable, community-based enterprises.

Strengthening local ecosystems for rural youth

Unleashing Africa’s young workforce

The Integrated Agribusiness Hub Programme in Africa launched in 2019 by IFAD is an innovative approach to agribusiness incubation that seeks to facilitate rural youth access to jobs and the establishment of profitable entreprises. The programme will enable 22,550 rural youth to access jobs in Africa between 2020 -2025.

The goal is that at least 70 per cent of participants access paid jobs and up to 30 per cent start or develop micro / small businesses.

The hubs are not just a space for training rural youth; they are where decent jobs for rural youth are brokered. It is a place where the ambitions and aspirations of rural young women and men of different ages meet the potential of rural economies.

As part of the first phase of the programme, IFAD initiated the process of rolling out the first two hubs in Rwanda and Nigeria in 2020; and between 2021 and 2022 launched the programmes in Kenya, Cameroon, Malawi, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Mozambique and Algeria totaling to nine hubs. IFAD partners with hosts in these countries to create jobs and income opportunities for youth in agriculture and related sectors.

The program ensures consistency between its target age group and national youth policy frameworks.
